OS X 10.5.3 Fixes Over 40 Security Vulnerabilities

May 28, 2008

Severity: High

28 May, 2008

Summary:

  • These vulnerabilities affect: OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) and OS X 10.5.x (Leopard), both client and server versions
  • How an attacker exploits them: Multiple vectors of attack, including enticing one of your users into visiting a URL or web site
  • Impact: Various results; in the worst case, attacker executes code on your user’s computer, potentially gaining control of your user’s computer
  • What to do: OS X administrators should download, test and install Security Update 2008-003 / Mac OS X 10.5.3

Exposure:

Today, Apple released a security update fixing at least 41 (number based on CVE-IDs) security issues in software packages that ship as part of OS X, including Apache, iCal, and Mail. Some of these vulnerabilities allow attackers to execute code on your OS X machines, so we rate this update Critical. Apply it as soon as you can. Three of the vulnerabilities which have been fixed are:

  • AppKit code execution vulnerability. AppKit is a OS X framework that helps developers implement graphical, event-driven user interfaces. According to Apple, Appkit suffers from an unspecified vulnerability involving the way it process specially crafted document files. By luring one of your users into downloading a malicious document, then enticing that user to open the document in an editor that uses AppKit (such as TextEdit), an attacker could exploit this flaw to execute code on your user’s computer, with that user’s privileges.
  • Help Viewer buffer overflow vulnerability. Help Viewer is an OS X component responsible for displaying Apple’s help content. Help Viewer suffers from a buffer overflow vulnerability involving the way it handles specially malformed help:topic URLs. By enticing one of your users into clicking a specially crafted link, an attacker can exploit this flaw to execute code on that user’s computer. By default, the attacker would only execute code with that user’s privileges.
  • CoreGraphics code execution vulnerability. CoreGraphics is a OS X framework that helps developers display different types of graphics on an OS X computer. CoreGraphics suffers from a what Apple calls a uninitialized variable issue having to do with the way it handles PDF documents. By tricking one of your users into downloading and viewing a malicious PDF document, an attacker can exploit this flaw to execute code on that user’s computer. By default, the attacker would only execute code with that user’s privileges.

Apple’s alert includes many, many more flaws, including other code execution flaws in addition to those described above. The remaining vulnerabilities also include Denial of Service (DoS) flaws, elevation of privilege flaws, and information disclosure vulnerabilities, plus others. Components patched by this security update include:

AFP Server Apache
AppKit Apple Pixlet Video
ATS CFNetwork
CoreFoundation CoreGraphics
CoreTypes CUPS
Flash Player Plug-in Help Viewer
iCal International Components for Unicode
Image Capture ImageIO
Kernel LoginWindow
Mail ruby
Single Sign-On Wiki Server

Please refer to Apple’s alert for more details.

If you manage OS X machines, we highly recommend you apply this update right away.

Solution Path:

Apple has released OS X Security Update 2008-003 / OS X 10.5.3 to fix all these security issues. OS X administrators should download, test, and deploy the corresponding update as soon as they can.

Note: If you have trouble figuring out which of these patches corresponds to your version of OS X, we recommend that you let OS X’s Software Update utility pick the correct update for you automatically.

For All Users:

These flaws enable many diverse exploitation methods. Some of the exploits are local, meaning that your perimeter firewall never encounters the attack (unless you use firewalls internally between departments). Installing these updates, therefore, is the most secure course of action.

Status:

Apple has released updates to fix these issues.

Apple’s May OS X Advisory

Legitimate Web Sites Serving Zero Day Flash Player Exploit

May 28, 2008

Severity: High

28 May, 2008

Summary:

  • These vulnerabilities affect: Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124.0 and earlier on Windows (potentially affects OS X, Unix, and Linux as well)
  • How an attacker exploits them: By enticing one of your users into playing a maliciously crafted Flash (.SWF) file
  • Impact: An attacker could execute code on the victim’s computer, and take control of it
  • What to do: Adobe hasn’t released a patch yet; see the solution section below for workarounds

Exposure:

Adobe Flash Player displays interactive, animated web content called Flash, often formatted as a Shockwave (.SWF) file. Adobe’s Flash Player ships by default with many web browsers, including Internet Explorer (IE). It also runs on many operating systems.

Late yesterday, Symantec, SANS Internet Storm Center Handler’s Diary [ 1 / 2 / 3 ], and SecurityFocus all warned of a serious zero day Flash Player vulnerability which they have found attackers exploiting in the wild. As of this writing, researchers do not know the technical details about this new vulnerability; they do know, however, that if one of your users downloads and plays a specially crafted Shockwave Flash (.SWF) file, an attacker could exploit the unpatched flaw to execute code on that user’s computer, with that user’s privileges. Since most Windows administrators grant their users local administrative privileges, an attacker could potentially exploit these flaws to gain complete control of a victim’s computer. The malicious .SWF file could be hosted on a web site, sent via an HTML e-mail, or delivered in other ways via applications that embed Flash.

According to the last update from SecurityFocus, attackers are exploiting this zero day vulnerability in great numbers. They warn that attackers have injected this malicious .SWF exploit into approximately 20,000 legitimate web sites, using web-based attack techniques like those we recently described in our recent Radio Free Security podcast.

On the other hand, this morning Symantec updated their Threatcon information claiming this Flash Player vulnerability may not be as new as they originally thought. Their latest technical analysis reveals that the flaw appears similar to one Adobe has already patched. Even with that, Symantec has still observed this new exploit affecting fully patched versions of Adobe Flash Player. So, either this is a true zero day variant of the original flaw, or Adobe’s patch is not working as reliably as it should. Regardless, if you allow Adobe Flash Player in your network, you should remain concerned about this new exploit and follow the workarounds suggested below.

Solution Path:

Because researchers first found this vulnerability being exploited in the wild, Adobe has not had time to release a patch for Flash Player. Until they do, the following workarounds will mitigate the risk of this new exploit affecting your users:

  • Internet Explorer (IE) users can set the killbit for Adobe’s Flash Player. This prevents IE from playing any Flash content with the Adobe Flash Player. Bear in mind that this also prevents legitimate Flash content from playing. Refer to this Microsoft Knowledge Base article for more details on how to set a killbit. Flash Player’s CLSID is BD96C556-65A3-11D0-983A-00C04FC29E36.
  • Firefox users should install the NoScript extension. NoScript prevents web sites from running JavaScript, Java, Flash, or other executable web content by default. While NoScript does prevent legitimate web sites from executing scripts as well, you can easily add those trusted sites to your white list to allow them to run the content you need.
  • Use a gateway device, like WatchGuard’s Firebox products, to block .SWF files from entering your network. See below for more details.

For All WatchGuard Users:

Some of WatchGuard’s Firebox models allow you to prevent your users from accessing Shockwave Flash files (.SWF) via the web (HTTP) or emails (SMTP, POP3). If you like, you can temporarily mitigate the risk of this vulnerability by blocking .SWF files using your Firebox’s proxy services (video instructions below). Again, many web sites rely on Flash for interactive content, and blocking Flash prevents these sites from working properly. Note that many popular video streaming sites, such as YouTube and JibJab, deliver video using a Flash front end, so this technique may render many video web sites unusable. Nonetheless, with the severity of this zero day exploit, you may want to temporarily block all .SWF content until Adobe releases a patch.

If you choose to block Flash content, follow the links below for video instructions on using your Firebox proxy’s content blocking features to block .SWF files by their file extensions:

Status:

Adobe has not had time to release a patch yet. Apply the workarounds described above.

Plaxo Aquired By Comcast

May 27, 2008

We are excited to announce some of the biggest news in the history of Plaxo. Plaxo has signed a definitive agreement** to be acquired by Comcast, the nation’s leading provider of entertainment, information and communications products and services. We’ve got at least a few months to go before the acquisition is completed, but we wanted to send you this note to let you know what’s coming up and how it affects you and your account.

Plaxo will remain an independent brand, organization and entity. We’ve been busy at work on our networked address book service and our next-generation social network, Pulse (if it’s been a while, please come back and check out all the new features). And, through additional projects with Comcast, we’ll be able to take these services to a lot more users and places than we could on our own… including the TV, phone and more.

If you’d like to read more about some of the great new things we’re planning, please read our official announcement.

So, what does this mean for current Plaxo members like you? The services you know and enjoy from Plaxo will not only continue to exist, but will also continue to evolve and improve. We will continue to make our basic services free, and we will continue to serve customers in multiple languages across the world. But, we’ll now be able to invest even more in our services, and we will enhance them with more users and more content available across a wider array of devices.

We will also continue to protect your privacy and give you control of your information. We will continue to protect your data with one of the strongest privacy policies, which will remain in effect even after the transition. And, we’ll continue to be a strong advocate for the open social web.

We’ve put together a quick Q&A about your privacy, account and your data.

Last, we’d like to extend an enormous thank you. Whether you’ve been a Plaxo user for a long time or just recently joined Pulse, we’d like to thank you for making Plaxo a vibrant network. We are excited to open a new chapter today and look forward to helping you keep in touch with the people you care about.

Cisco IOS + SSH = DoS

May 27, 2008

Severity: Medium

21 May, 2007

Summary:

  • These vulnerabilities affect: Cisco IOS 12.4 devices with SSH enabled
  • How an attacker exploits them: By sending specially crafted SSH packets
  • Impact: An attacker could repeatedly reboot your Cisco IOS device, keeping it offline for as long as he could sustain his attack
  • What to do: Download and install the appropriate Cisco update as soon as possible

Exposure:

Cisco’s IOS software is the operating system that runs on most Cisco routers and switches. The IOS operating system provides network services for managing Cisco devices, and processes the network traffic passing through the device. IOS also ships with an optional SSH server that allows you to securely manage your IOS device via an encrypted Command Line Interface (CLI).

Today, Cisco released an advisory describing multiple vulnerabilities affecting the SSH server that runs on Cisco IOS devices. Cisco doesn’t describe these flaws in technical detail, but they admit that a remote attacker could exploit them to reboot your IOS device. By repeatedly exploiting these DoS vulnerabilities, an attacker could keep IOS devices, like your gateway router, offline for as long as he could sustain his attack.

One mitigating factor lowers the severity of these vulnerabilities: Cisco IOS does not enable the SSH server by default. Your Cisco IOS devices are only vulnerable to these flaws if you have manually enabled the SSH server. We assume that most Cisco administrators prefer to manage their IOS devices securely, and have enabled SSH for that very reason. Even if you haven’t enabled the SSH server, however, we still suggest you apply Cisco’s update to make sure you (or another staff member) cannot accidentally enable the vulnerable SSH server in the future.

Solution Path:

Cisco has released patches to fix these vulnerabilities. If you use any Cisco device running IOS 12.4 software, you should immediately consult the “Software Versions and Fixes” and “Obtaining Fixed Software” section of Cisco’s advisory to learn which fixes apply to your devices, and how to obtain them.

For All WatchGuard Users:

Since this vulnerability can affect your router, which is typically in front of your WatchGuard firewall, Cisco’s patches are the best solution.

Status:

Cisco has issued patches which fix the problem.

also was responsible for managing Avaya’s top global alliances, including systems integrator and

service provider partnerships.

in the market.”

staff,” said Ken Eglberger, president of Advent Communications Inc., Avaya dealer and Jenne

customer. “I’ve worked with Dave in various roles for more than 20 years and have seen his

commitment to ethics, integrity, innovation and hard work. That’s a great match with Jenne’s

philosophies—and one that can help the company reach a new level.”

accountability for partners, such as Juniper, Extreme, Samsung, AT&T, Verizon, BT, Orange

Business Services, IBM, HP, EDS and many others. In addition, living and working in Asia and

Europe gave him significant experience gauging and analyzing the far-reaching effects of

globalization on growth strategies.

In addition to his deep international experience, Johnson was Avaya’s Group Vice President of

the Small and Medium Business Solutions Division. His responsibilities included all R&D, product

management, marketing, sales, service and operations for the Small and Medium Business
