WatchGuard is pleased to announce the availability of WatchGuard System Manager 10.1, Fireware and Fireware Pro 10.1 for Firebox X Core and Firebox X Peak, and Firebox X Edge models. The v10.1 release builds on the features in the v10.0 release, and adds support for three new languages. In addition to English, you can install a French, Japanese, or Simplified Chinese language pack and use our new localized user interface in any of these three languages. Note that data input must still be made using standard ASCII characters and any data returned from the (English) operating system (e.g. log data) is displayed in English only.
There are important things to understand before you get started using version 10.1; it also contains a number of bug fixes for issues reported by WatchGuard customers. Please refer to the Release Notes for a list of known and resolved issues.
Does this Release Pertain to Me?
Download, test and install this release if you are experiencing one of the resolved bugs listed in the Release Notes, or if you need a localized product in Chinese, French, or Japanese.
There are no changes or bug fixes to WFS software in this release.

Firebox X Peak, Core, and Edge owners who have a current LiveSecurity Service subscription can obtain this update without additional charge by downloading the applicable packages from the Software Downloads web page, which also includes clear installation instructions. SuperQ for AltiWare 5.2 is now available. In the 5.2 release, a SuperQ agent may belong to multiple workgroups, and up to 10 SuperQ queues are supported.
SuperQ deployment is available through AltiGen’s Professional Development Services, which includes presales consultation, implementation support, and deployment services.
AltiGen SuperQ is a Java-based application designed to queue and distribute calls for call centers with workgroups located in different geographic locations or across multiple AltiContact Manager (ACM) systems. Each server can have one or more local workgroup queues. All
locations and servers are tied together over an internet protocol (IP) network and voice over IP (VoIP) SIP tie trunk. AltiGen SuperQ optimizes efficiency by controlling calls in the carrier’s network termination site before they travel through the IP network and reach local automatic call
distributors (ACDs).

Altigen has announced that due to technology evelution that they are unable to produce any more 1G-series chassis.
There are only a handful left for use in upgrades and new deals remaining. There is NO replacement for the 1G available and no more can or will be produced.
As a final note, any deals successfully closed with 1G chassis after the 1G-series inventory is exhausted can only be remedied by the AltiGen dealer directly. AltiGen will be unable to provide relief on this matter after the fact.

Exposure:
Safari is the default web browser that ships with OS X. Recently, Apple also released Safari for Windows, pushing it to Quicktime and iTunes users via Apple Software Update.
Today, Apple released an advisory describing four vulnerabilities that affect Safari, and components that ship with it. The flaws affect both the OS X and Windows versions of Safari. The worst of these vulnerabilities potentially allows attackers to execute malicious code on your Safari user’s machines. If you use Safari in your network — whether on a PC or Mac — you should update to version 3.1.1 at your earliest convenience. Some of the fixed vulnerabilities include:
- WebKit buffer overflow vulnerability. WebKit is the web browser engine Safari uses on OS X machines. WebKit suffers from a buffer overflow vulnerability involving the way it handles JavaScript regular expressions. By luring one of your users to a malicious web page, an attacker could exploit this flaw to execute code on your user’s computer with your user’s privileges. Since OS X users don’t have administrative privileges by default, an attacker wouldn’t be able to exploit this flaw to gain complete control of their machines without significant user interaction; he could still, however, exploit this flaw to do anything the victimized user could do.
- WebKit cross-site scripting vulnerability. WebKit also suffers from a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability involving the way it handles URLs containing the colon character in a host name. By enticing one of your users into clicking a specially crafted link, an attacker could exploit this flaw to execute scripts on that user’s computer under the context of another legitimate site which your user trusts. For a more general explanation of XSS attacks, see our article “Anatomy of a Cross-Site Scripting Attack.”
Apple’s alert also covers two vulnerabilities that affect the Windows version of Safari. By enticing one of your users to a malicious web site, an attacker could exploit the worst of these two flaws to execute code on that user’s computer, potentially gaining control of it. However, we suspect few Windows users actually browse with Safari, so these flaws probably pose little risk to Windows users.
Solution Path:
Apple has release Safari 3.1.1 for OS X and Windows. If you use Safari in your network, you should download and install this update at your earliest convenience.
Note: You can also use Apple and OS X’s Software Update utility to install Safari updates automatically.
For All WatchGuard Users:
These attacks travel as normal-looking HTTP traffic, which you must allow if your network users need to access the World Wide Web. Therefore, the patches above are your best solution.
Status:
Apple released Safari 3.1.1 to correct these issues.

EBay Inc (EBAY.O) posted a 22 percent rise in quarterly net profit, topping Wall Street’s average estimate, as pricing changes increased online auction listings and pushed revenue above all forecasts.
The company also raised its 2008 revenue target, but its stock barely rose as executives said the softening U.S. and UK economies had modestly slowed demand and that auction customers at the end of the quarter were less inclined to buy.
“While we are raising our full-year outlook, we still remain cautious about the economic environment,” Chief Financial Officer Bob Swan told investors on a conference call following the report on Wednesday.
“We saw a slowing in terms of buyers’ propensity to buy toward the end of the first quarter,” Swan said.
EBay is in the midst of a long-term plan to revive growth in its core auctions business that involve sweeping changes to how buyers and sellers deal with one another on the site.
Chief Executive John Donahoe said eBay sellers had responded to pricing changes and stepped-up customer service requirements by increasing the volume of new auction listings during the last six weeks of the first quarter.
Buyers are trusting eBay more as a result, he said. EBay also has begun using discount coupons to reward frequent top buyers. These offers will expand through 2008, Donahoe said.
First-quarter net income rose to $459.7 million, or 34 cents a share — buoyed by a buyback of 3 percent of its shares — compared with the year-earlier-quarter’s $377.1 million, or 27 cents per share. Revenue rose 24 percent to $2.19 billion.
EBay raised its projected 2008 growth rate by 2 to 3 percentage points from a downbeat January forecast, setting its net revenue target at $8.7 billion to $9.0 billion.
“Bottom line, the pricing changes they instituted in February are starting to have the desired effect,” Jefferies & Co analyst Youssef Squali said. “The long-term sustainability of these benefits, beyond the next few quarters, is the big question now.”
Following the earnings, eBay shares edged up to $32.15 in extended trade from a close of $32.12, up 1.7 percent on Wednesday. In anticipation of the results, the stock has jumped 25 percent since mid-March, when it traded at two-year lows.
EBay got a lift from international businesses, which made up 55 percent of revenue. Translating foreign sales to dollars lifted revenue by $110 million alone. While U.S. revenue grew 16 percent, overseas sales grew at twice that rate.
SIGNS OF PROGRESS
The company is benefiting from rising cross-border trading as international buyers seek out deals on the company’s U.S. auction site. Such trade generated 18 percent of quarterly revenue as eBay serves as a substitute for discount shopping expeditions to Manhattan or other U.S. cities by tourists.
“Almost a fifth of our trade is cross-border,” Donahoe said. “We saw a lot of buyers in Europe buy on the U.S. site because of the weakening U.S. dollar.”
Excluding one-time items, the San Jose, California-based company reported a profit of $562 million, or 42 cents per diluted share, versus $460 million, or 33 cents per diluted share, a year ago. It spent $1 billion on share buybacks.
Profits topped analysts’ average estimates by 3 cents per share, both in net terms and excluding one-time items.
Net revenue for eBay’s core marketplaces business grew 19 percent to $1.48 billion. PayPal, its online payments service, grew 32 percent to $582 million. Web-based call service Skype’s revenue was $126 million, up 61 percent. Skype added 33 million new users worldwide, with 309 million registered users.
First-quarter new eBay listings rose 2 percent on the fourth quarter and 10 percent from a year ago. But for merchandising improvements to translate into stepped-up revenue growth, eBay must do more to attract new buyers, analysts say.
In a sign eBay may have begun making progress winning back users, it reported that active users on the site grew 1 percent in the first quarter, the first increase in several quarters.
EBay is experimenting with giving PayPal users buying on eBay a money-back guarantee. In June, in Australia, eBay will begin guaranteeing purchases using PayPal up to A$20,000 in value and then expand the program to other countries.
“We had some good, early progress. We still have a lot to do,” Donahoe said. “But I think we are going to make a lot of progress this year.”

[Editor's Note: In the March, 2008 edition of my podcast Radio Free Security: Firebox Special, WatchGuard's lead technical trainer Kyle Porter told our listeners all about Single Sign-On, a new feature in Fireware Version 10. It's available on any WatchGuard appliance that can run Version 10, including our e-Series Fireboxes and our Edge product line. I've summarized Kyle's descriptions here, for those who prefer reading to listening; or, for those who've heard the podcast and want some backup documentation. --Mark]
Single Sign-On should be seen as a part of the larger authentication setup on Fireboxes. Before SSO, users could authenticate to the firewall, either as a specific user or as a member of a group. The network administrator could restrict access to particular services, or apply particular WebBlocker rules, to users who were authenticated. You, the administrator, could also integrate that authentication with your existing domain controller (such as an Active Directory server), but there was a limitation: End users had to affirmatively authenticate to the firewall using a web browser. Whether or not they were logged onto their Active Directory domain was unimportant to the firewall; it still needed them to prove who they were by directing our web app to the firewall.
So, if you had a hundred users on your network, all one hundred of them had to know how to get to a particular web page, and what to type when they got there. (In most cases, they had to enter the same username and password they had already entered when they logged onto the network that morning.) This process also meant that you probably spent more time than you wanted in educating users how to do that. So, it was probably not our most popular feature. Admins really liked the results…but that first week could be a little painful for them.
All of that is behind us now, replaced by a much simpler method. With the new Single Sign-On (SSO) process in Fireware 10, you merely install one piece of software — the WatchGuard Authentication Gateway — onto a PC on your domain. The end users don’t have to install any software on their PCs. So here’s how it works now: If you’re integrating with an Active Directory domain, the end user logs in to the network in the morning as he normally would. When he tries to pass traffic through the firewall, the firewall invokes SSO and queries the agent we’ve installed. That agent queries the Active Directory controller, and identity is established without the user ever knowing that it all happened in the background. This works regardless of whether that traffic is going out to the Internet, or across the firewall to other networks.
Easier to set up, too
Administrators will find the same authentication gateway installation process for both Edge and Fireware systems; after that, each product is configured in a slightly different way on the various user interfaces. Here’s an overview of how to get Single Sign-On up and running on your network:
First of all, you need to have a directory server that can take advantage of the software, such as an LDAP or an Active Directory server.
Next, install our Authentication Gateway software on a PC that has a static IP address on the network, so the Firebox can always find it. That PC has to be a member of the domain in which the users will authenticate.
Then, in the Firewall Authentication dialog, select “Enable Single Sign-On” and point to the IP address where the gateway software has been installed. But since you’ve previously set up the Active Directory domain, and have users and groups established, most of the heavy work has already been done. You’re just telling the Firebox, “Here’s a computer on the network that can tell you all about these users when you need to know.”
If all this sounds too good to be true, well, there are some minor “gotchas” — but in my view, they’re not serious. I’ve already mentioned some of the limitations in the ways our SSO interacts with Active Directory:
- Your system must use LDAP or Active Directory architecture
- The PC you install the gateway software on must be a member of that domain, and
- The PC must have a static IP address.
There are a few other minor limitations: The user account under which you install SSO must run as a service on the domain. (This is a particular domain membership attribute that can be selected in domain setup.) That PC must also be a member of the domain administrator’s group, in Active Directory. Those aren’t serious limitations, though; most of the time you’ll probably install this gateway software on the directory controller itself, which already has all these existing permissions.
One other issue to pay attention to: If the PC from which a user authenticates has more than one account (for example, maybe you’ve installed software that runs with one level of permissions in the background, while the end user logs in with a different account), that’s not a good setup for an architecture using Single Sign-On. You want your PCs to be running a single user account that the domain controller can query for.
A network administrator who runs a dynamically-addressed environment, and wants to restrict “who can do what” during the workday, cannot limit this by IP address; the addresses are assigned dynamically, and they change often. An IP address doesn’t map reliably to a specific user. By having the user authenticate to the Firebox instead, you can apply rules based upon who a user actually is, rather than the user’s current IP address. Fireware 10’s new Single Sign-On feature gets extra leverage off the work you’ve already put into defining your users in Active Directory. With SSO, firewall authentication is much easier to implement — making it easier for you to enjoy the benefits of nuanced control over your users.
