Security Leaders Explain “Fast Flux;” Debate Cyberterrorism

July 30, 2007

30 July, 2007

The latest episode of LiveSecurity’s monthly podcast, Radio Free Security, is now available for download from WatchGuard’s web site or from iTunes.

In honor of Black Hat, the globally renowned security conference taking place in Las Vegas this coming week, Radio Free Security leaves its normal format at home to let highly qualified guests lead the discussion:

  • How criminals avoid being traced by law enforcement. Dave Piscitello, President of Core Competence and a fellow of the ICANN Security and Stability Committee, explains a new evasion technique known as DNS Fast Flux. Using this technique, illegal web sites that formerly could avoid law enforcement for mere hours can now stay up for weeks. Soon everyone will be discussing this emerging technique, but Radio Free Security listeners will be among the first to understand it.
  • Is the cyberterror threat credible? In the wake of the recent Die Hard movie, which depicts hackers taking down the US infrastructure, we present this recording of security stars debating the plausibility of such a scenario. Participants include: Bryan Cunningham (former Deputy Legal Adviser to Condoleezza Rice; drafted portions of the Patriot Act), Jim Harrison (expert on hardening Microsoft’s ISA server), Dan Kaminsky (noted security researcher and speaker), Johnny Long (author, Google Hacking for Penetration Testers), Tim Mullen (teaches internationally on how to harden Windows products; popular author), and members of Sensepost, a South African security consultancy with a global clientele of banks and insurance companies. This free-wheeling “Security and Beer Roundtable,” presented in transcript form in 2005, is now released in audio for the first time and remains every bit as relevant as the day it was recorded.

You’ll find the latest episode, titled “Fast Flux and Cyberterrorists,” on our Web site, right here. If you prefer, you can download Radio Free Security directly to your iPod from iTunes.

AltiGen Communications Reports Third Quarter Fiscal 2007 Results

July 30, 2007

- Company Delivers Four Point Growth Plan -

FREMONT, Calif., July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — AltiGen Communications, Inc. , a leading manufacturer of VoIP telephony solutions, today reported its financial results for the fiscal 2007 third quarter and nine months ended June 30, 2007.

Gilbert Hu, chairman and CEO, stated, “This quarter’s revenue of $4.2 million increased slightly compared to last quarter, and we are very encouraged by the positive reception of our 5.1 release now available across our entire product line. The new version uses Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), is compatible with the MAX1000 launched in December and creates an affordable, scalable communications solution that is particularly attractive for multi-location small-to-medium-sized businesses (SMBs).”

Hu continued, “Last quarter, we added management resources and welcomed Jerry Fleming to our team. Jerry will focus on operations in the US and Europe, including investor relations, as I continue to lead AltiGen with specific focus on Asia.”

Jeremiah Fleming, president and COO, commented, “After visiting with many resellers and customers, I am even more convinced about our growth opportunities. The feedback from these meetings significantly contributed to the development of our new Four Point Growth Plan, which we are executing now to drive future growth and shareholder value.”

Four Point Growth Plan -- Increase the distribution channel. -- Introduce new revenue sources. -- Implement improved, segmented marketing. -- Further improve product functionality and scalability.

“In the past quarter, we added approximately 30 resellers to our ranks, and we anticipate they can be revenue contributors in approximately six months. Additionally, this fall we will implement software assurance and hardware warranty programs, which will better serve our clients, add a recurring revenue stream, and identify client expansion opportunities. We continue to see more multi-location deals as we demonstrate the ability of our systems to significantly reduce the cost of ownership in customers’ remote offices. I look forward to updating you on our progress as we implement all the stages of our growth plan,” concluded Fleming.

Financial Results

Revenue for the fiscal 2007 third quarter was $4.2 million, compared to $4.8 million a year ago and $4.1 million in the previous quarter. Net loss for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 was $526,000 or $0.03 per share, compared to net income of $190,000 or $0.01 per share in the same period last year, and a net loss of $172,000 or $0.01 per share in the previous quarter. These results include the effects of FASB 123R expensing of share-based compensation of $161,000, $191,000 and $105,000, respectively.

Phil McDermott, AltiGen’s CFO said, “During the quarter, sales of our new MAX1000 IP-PBX were up nine percent over last quarter, and in June, sales of our newly released 5.1 upgraded products increased over prior months, illustrating the impact of our SIP upgrade. As expected, this quarter expenses increased reflecting hires to drive dealer recruitment and support the expanded dealer base.”

Revenue for the first nine months of fiscal 2007 was $12.7 million, compared to $13.4 million in the first nine months of 2006. Net loss for the first nine months of fiscal 2007 was $791,000 or $0.05 per share, compared to a net loss of $147,000 or $0.01 per share in the prior year period. These results include the effects of FASB 123R expensing of share-based compensation of $417,000 and $627,000, respectively.

Top Five Reasons to Choose Windows Mobile 5.0

July 26, 2007

In today’s fast-paced business environment, you often need immediate access to information. Being far from your desk is no excuse. But a smartphone or Pocket PC running Windows Mobile 5.0 can be your vital link.No other mobile device works as well with your personal computer and existing software. In fact, many Windows Mobile powered devices come with mobile versions of software you may already use. And since they can easily share data with your PC and Exchange Server network and are highly customizable, they can provide the information you need—wherever you go.

With Windows Mobile 5.0 you can:

1. Stay productive with mobile versions of the Microsoft Office programs¹, plus enterprise software and third-party applications. With a Windows Mobile powered device, you can be productive when you’re away from your desk, thanks to mobile versions of the Microsoft Office programs you may already use. Pocket PC Phones come with familiar software, such as Microsoft Office Word Mobile and Microsoft Office Excel Mobile. You can review and edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets or create and edit new ones on your mobile device. Microsoft Office PowerPoint Mobile is also included so you can view PowerPoint e‑mail attachments and review your presentations while you’re on your way to client meetings.

In addition, wide support from third-party developers allows your mobile device to do even more. There are applications available for customer relationship management, sales force automation, inventory management, and much more. You can stay in touch with customers and access the business information you need when you’re away from your office.

2. Stay connected to all your e-mail accounts with Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile. All devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 come with Outlook Mobile, so you can access your e‑mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Tasks while you’re away from your desk. Using a mobile version of the same Outlook application that’s on your PC, you can access your e‑mail from any location where you have connectivity—not only Microsoft Exchange Server-based e‑mail, but also e‑mail from a variety of other sources, including MSN Hotmail and Web-based e-mail. Plus, with Exchange Server and the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, it is possible to access your company’s global address list so you never have to worry about whether you remembered to take a co-worker’s contact information with you.

3. Access up-to-date Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks. Wherever you go, as long as you have connectivity, Windows Mobile 5.0 keeps your vital information up to date. Just use Outlook Mobile to quickly sync your smartphone with your desktop PC or Exchange Server. If your device has the Messaging and Security Feature pack, and your company is using Exchange Server 2003 SP2, you’ll be able to have updates automatically sent, or “pushed,” to your smartphone using Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology.* Your Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and e‑mail will stay up to date on your smartphone and computer without any effort on your part.

4. Get up to speed right away. You’re working with familiar Windows and Microsoft Office software. You’ll feel comfortable quickly with Windows Mobile 5.0, because it’s designed with Windows users in mind. The device may be different, but the operating system and software will feel familiar. If you purchase a Pocket PC Phone with Windows Mobile 5.0 you’ll have mobile versions of the same Microsoft Office programs that you use on your desktop PC. The familiar interface allows you to start using the software right away, without a steep learning curve. You can also transfer documents between your desktop PC and your Windows Mobile powered Pocket PC.

5. Easily connect Windows Mobile powered smartphones with Exchange Server, without buying any additional server-side hardware or software.** Business executives and IT professionals will appreciate the built-in support for Windows Mobile 5.0 in Exchange Server 2003. With Windows Mobile 5.0, there’s no need to purchase new server-side hardware or software for synchronization. Users will be able to synchronize their e‑mail and Outlook data with Exchange Server right out of the box. And a single Exchange Server 2003 system can support as many as 10,000 mobile users. Plus, features such as on-device password enforcement and persistent data storage improve security and reliability.

If you are someone who needs to stay in touch with important information away from the office, Windows Mobile 5.0 adds up to greater productivity, better access to the data you need, and added convenience. For business executives, Windows Mobile 5.0 provides a cost-effective solution with a rapid return on investment. And for IT professionals, it means enhanced security, easier management, and lower support costs.

1 Mobile Versions of Microsoft Office Programs are currently only available on Pocket PC and Phone enabled Pocket PCs (e.g. Treo 700w, 8125, MDA) not Windows Mobile Smartphones (e.g. 2125, SDA).*Direct Push technology and device wipe features require Windows Mobile 5.0 with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP) and Windows Small Business Server 2003 updated with Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack**Connectivity and synchronization may require separately purchased equipment and/or wireless products (e.g., Wi-Fi card, network software, server hardware, and/or redirector software). Service plans are required for Internet, Wi-Fi and phone access. Features and performance may vary by service provider and are subject to network limitations. See device manufacturer, service provider and/or corporate IT department for details.

Ocean City, NJ geeks up the beach

July 26, 2007

Visitors to the Jersey shore will soon have more to look forward to than just big hair and Bon Jovi — Ocean City, in south Jersey, is currently accepting bids for a planned beach network that will encompass everything from tracking parking spots to monitoring garbage can levels. The $3M system, which will feature a mix of WiFi and RFID devices, is expected to cut the costs of running the beach dramatically — trimming almost half of the $282,000 budget for access badge checkers, for example. Other planned features include the ability to link access wristbands together, so that parents can be alerted via SMS if one of their kids ventures beyond the boundaries of the boardwalk, and RFID payment services for food and souvenir shops. Now all they need is some of those Segway beach cops and the future will have finally arrived.

Report: Vista Adoption Outpacing OS X

July 25, 2007

By Kevin McLaughlin, CMP Channel
2:01 PM EDT Tue. Jul. 24, 2007

Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system has been steadily gaining market share since its release earlier this year, and is on pace to overtake usage of Mac OS X within the next few months, according to a study published Tuesday by research firm NetApplications. In February, Mac OS X’s market share stood at 6.38 percent, while Vista — which launched Jan. 30 — stood at just 0.93 percent. But in June, Mac OS X usage had dipped to 6 percent, while Vista usage had jumped to 4.52 percent, according to the study.

The NetApplications study also found that Windows XP usage dropped only slightly during the February to June period, from 84.33 percent in February to 81.94 percent.

Many solution providers say their customers still don’t see the business benefits of adopting Vista, and have avoided migrating to the next generation OS until application and hardware compatibility issues are addressed. Many VARs believe this will happen when Microsoft releases Vista service pack 1 later this year.

Operating system changes and upgrades are a major hassle for enterprises, says Reza Zarafshar, president and CEO of Advanced Computer Concepts, a solution provider based in McLean, Va.

“We’re finding out that people aren’t really jumping up and down wanting to upgrade [to Vista] unless there’s a compelling reason. We have customers ordering large numbers of brand new laptops and desktops and specifically saying they don’t want Vista,” Zarafshar said.

Industry giants have also recently raised the yellow flag on Vista adoption. Earlier this month, a Dell Europe executive said the company was “stepping back” from telling people they must upgrade to Vista. And on Monday, Acer president Gianfranco Lanci went even further in describing the impact Windows Vista has had since its release.

“The whole industry is disappointed with Windows Vista,” Lanci said in an interview with the German edition of the Financial Times.

CDW also recently completed a customer tracking survey and found that the majority of its customers are not ready to upgrade to Microsoft Vista.

“We found the majority is not using or evaluating [Vista] at this time. Those that are testing and evaluating said they plan to implement in the next 12 months,” said Harry Harczak, executive vice president at CDW.

CDW plans to conduct another survey before the end of the year, Harczak said. “We will continue to promote Vista as people prepare their adoption plans,” he said.

Instant travel-tales: Share your vacation in real-time

July 25, 2007

Sharing a special moment of your vacation with loved ones back home has never been easier.

Thanks to a growing number of free blog, photo-sharing, and social networking Web sites, such as Windows Live Spaces and Where are You Now? (WAYN), friends and family no longer have to wait until you get home to hear about your vacation.

On This Page
Free and easy Free and easy

Free and easy

Most social networking sites are free and easy to use. Some, such as Windows Live Spaces, enable you to tell your friends what you’re doing, post up to 500 photos per month, and blog about your adventures. The little star icon, called a “gleam,” that appears next to contacts in Windows Live Messenger lets friends know you’ve recently updated your Space.

Others, such as Flickr and Photobucket, specialize in hosting photo or video galleries and slide shows. Traveljournals.net is another free service that provides travelers with a place to post their photos, share stories, and keep friends and family up-to-date on their location. Users can have multiple travel journals, upload unlimited photos, and pass on their individual URL to friends who can check on their travels any time they want.

“The real-time aspect is very nice,” says Sam Javanrouh, whose Daily Dose of Imagery photo blog has won awards every year since he launched it three years ago, including the 2006 Best Art/Photo Blog from the Canadian weblog awards.

“It changes the dynamic,” he says. “People have already seen where you’ve been and the conversation (when you return) starts from that.”

User-friendly

When you’re on the road, traveling through different countries or soaking up the sun, it’s not uncommon to take tons of photos and want to share them with friends and family. But the last thing you want is technical difficulties. Because these “sharing sites” are so user-friendly, you don’t need to be a computer whiz to use them.

What you will need:

A digital camera or camera phone
A computer (either your own laptop, or a computer located in a hotel, library, cyber café, cruise ship—the options are increasing daily)
A media card reader, if your laptop doesn’t have one
For travel outside of North America, a power adapter for recharging your cell phone or laptop

You might also want to pack a battery charger if you use rechargeable batteries.

If you prefer to pack light, as I did on a motorcycle trip through Europe, some sites, like Windows Live Spaces, accept text and photo posts from cell phones. Under Settings, enable “e-mail publishing.” You will then be given an e-mail address just for blogging. You can e-send blog entries and photos right from your cell phone to this address, from anywhere in the world where your phone has Internet access. Your friends and family just have to check your Windows Live Space to see exactly what you’re up to—as you’re doing it!

It can be helpful to have a Wi-Fi phone for easy access to the Web when you can’t get to an Internet café. I had a Hewlett-Packard iPAQ camera phone with Wi-Fi capability that allowed me to access the Internet anywhere I could find a wireless signal. During my trip to Europe, I even found free Wi-Fi hotspots at inexpensive hostels.

Photo-editing on the fly

If you want to modify images, there’s a wide range of photo-editing software to choose from. Windows Photo Gallery comes free with the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. Its Auto Adjust feature can automatically lighten and sharpen a too-dark photograph with just one click. You can also fix red eye, crop photos, and change color photos to beautiful black and whites—with just a few clicks of your mouse.

If the computer you’re using doesn’t have Windows Vista installed, you can also use online photo-editing services at sites like Phixr, GIFworks, or Picnik to make quick changes.

Where to find wireless access

Web access is available pretty well everywhere these days. Most hotels and cruise ships offer wireless services that allow you to access the Internet from a laptop in your room. If you don’t want to pack your laptop, many provide Internet facilities with computers.

Free Wi-Fi is available at many cafés and some restaurants, including many Starbucks and McDonald’s locations. If your laptop has a wireless card, just click your wireless icon and ask for a display of available wireless networks. You can find a directory of free Wi-Fi locations on the Wi-Fi Freespot Web site.

On my motorcycle trip, I favored full-out Internet facilities, which provided computers and even webcams. Full-size keyboards are definitely more comfortable than cell phone keyboards. Sites like Easy Internet Café provide links to Internet cafes in several cities in Europe and the U.S. Simply search for your city and get a map and contact info for the closest café.

When booking your hotel or other lodgings, you might want to ask about Internet access. “An Internet connection is part of my criteria when I book a hotel,” Javanrouh says.

Technology has helped make travel a shared experience. Not only can you send e-mail to family members back home—you can show them what you’re up to at any given moment, and where you’re off to next. For many people, it adds a new and exciting dimension to travel.

Exciting news for clip art fans

July 24, 2007

Check it out! Those crazy kids over at clip art and media world headquarters (about 20 feet from my office) now have their own blog. Site manager Beatrice Billard and content project manager Natalie Parks built it to show off the fun stuff you can do with all the free media we offer.

“The idea behind this blog is sharing tips and tricks on using media content in Office documents, showing fun things you can do with clip art and generally making your documents all spiffy,” they wrote in their first post. “We’ll do our best to update regularly and address frequently asked questions in upcoming posts.”

On a related note, Office Online will debut a new page featuring all Office product blogs soon. Stay tuned for that news.

And, as always, users can even record and save their conferences.

A subscription to ReadyTalk also allows unlimited free minutes of Web conferencing for a chairperson and two participants.

Audio conferences can even coincide with Web conferences so that information can be presented on participants’ computers during the discussion.
