Movies and more with Windows Vista

June 26, 2007

Movie buffs, rejoice! Windows Vista has what you need

Movies and more with Windows VistaI admit it: I love Windows Vista. I like the fact that Windows Media Center (available with the Ultimate and Home Premium editions) lets me access movies I’ve downloaded to different televisions in my home through the use of Media Center Extenders like Xbox 360. I also like that I can make movies with Windows Movie Maker.

If you’re a movie fan, you’ll love Windows Vista, too. In this article, I’ll show you how quickly you can record movies from television or download them from the Internet, how you can watch those movies throughout your home, and how you can create your own movies using Windows Movie Maker.

Recording movies from television

You may already know that you can record movies from television with Windows Media Center; it’s probably one of the easiest things you can do with the program. But there are a couple of things to remember when you record a favorite movie from TV.

First, you need to set some general recording options to make sure you catch the entire movie. And second, there are two separate ways to record a movie: as it plays on live television or by setting up a request in the guide.

To set general recording options, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows Media Center Start screen, scroll to Tasks, and click Settings.

To record a movie as it plays, press Record on the remote control or use your mouse to click the red Record button on the screen. If you prefer to set up the recording in advance, click TV + Movies on the main menu, click Guide, and then find the movie you want. (In this illustration, I’ve selected Cheaper by the Dozen 2.) Right-click the movie, then click Record and you’re all set!

You can record movies using the Windows Media Center Guide.

Watching and downloading movies

If you hate making trips to the video store, you’ll be glad to know that Windows Media Center can eliminate that problem for you. Multiple online media companies have partnered with Microsoft to let you download movies easily.

Vongo, Kazaa, Cinemanow, and other online stores offer tons of movies (and other media) to buy or rent. Most sites are subscription-based and offer a range of options depending upon the licensing agreement they have with a particular movie studio.

Options include direct purchase of a movie so that you can burn it to DVD, downloading of a movie so you can watch it for a designated time period, and movies that you can watch instantly that never download to your computer. Prices range from as little as 49 cents for a rental with limited viewings to as much as $19.99 for a straight download you can keep forever.

Tip: Windows Media Center also offers free movie downloads through television networks like Showtime, even if you’re not a Showtime subscriber.

It’s important to remember these different options—just because you buy a movie doesn’t mean you own it and can do whatever you want with it. It will take about an hour to an hour and a half to download a typical two-hour movie on a high-speed connection. Besides time, you’ll also need about 1.5 gigabytes of free space on your hard drive per movie. By the way, if you just can’t wait, you can usually watch a movie as it downloads, too.

To download a movie, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows Media Center Start screen, scroll to Online Media.

Once you’re ready to watch the movie, just locate and select it in the Windows Media Center Library you’ve stored it in.

Downloading a movie from Vongo

There are plenty of online media sources such as Vongo that let you download movies.

Grabbing movies off Xbox Live

If you have an Xbox 360, you’ll want to check out the Xbox Live Marketplace. This is where you can rent and download movies directly to your Xbox. Movies are priced using a point system—1,000 Microsoft Points can be purchased through Xbox Live for $12.50.

From your Xbox, go to Xbox Live Marketplace to access the movie selection. A quick note: Windows Vista is not compatible with the original Xbox—only Xbox 360.

Xbox Live Marketplace lets you download movies directly to your Xbox 360 video game system.

Creating movies with Windows Movie Maker

Movie buffs don’t usually want to stop at watching movies; they would love to create their own, too. But for most of us, the process seems pretty frightening. With Windows Movie Maker, though, even I could put together a decent little movie of my daughter using film from my video camera. The secret to making a quick and easy movie is to use the AutoMovie option. Oh, sure, you can make a movie manually but why would you do that when you’ve got a nifty little tool that analyzes your video along with your pictures and music selections, then combines everything to make a movie based on the editing style you select?

That’s right: You pretty much dump in what you want in the movie, and then tell Windows Movie Maker to make your movie. You will need, of course, to have all this content on your computer hard drive, but beyond that there isn’t much to think about.

Tip: Windows Movie Maker will assign any picture a duration of four seconds unless you otherwise specify. To create a movie with Windows Movie Maker, open the program and then follow these steps:

1. Click the collection where your movie or multiple clips are stored.

There’s actually much more that can be done with movies in Windows Vista, but you’ve got the bulk of the information here. I hope you’ll try out a few things I’ve mentioned—movies are a great way to relax, so why not let Windows Vista help you watch as many as you want?

How would you use this in the office?

Microsoft SurfaceA few years back I gathered around a hacked up Ikea table and couldn’t believe my eyes. Tucked into the corner of a trade show of sorts on campus, behind a curtain reserved only for full-time employees, was a device doing things people were only talking about at the time. Photos were spilling out of little chips onto the table. People were playing common board games and finger painting by touch. Entire music collections were being dragged around as song lists were created. The crowd listened and watched as the potential for such a device was outlined.

Fast forward to yesterday and the world is now getting to see something a few of us have been keeping bottled up since that Ikea table was first demonstrated. Microsoft Surface, after multiple code names and designs, has finally arrived. And while what it does is still impressive, where it will first be used is the real news. When first demo’d we were only shown its home uses. Now we’re going to see how it will work for businesses such a T-Mobile and Harrah’s.

So what’s next? The workplace, of course! At least we assume. We have no inside information. But there is most certainly potential. I can foresee a day where the Surface replaces the conference room table. No more handing out copies of documents or sending e-mail to people who didn’t get the presentation. Everything can be shared at the table electronically. What about reserving the room to begin with? If the Surface is in the lobby, you could find out which rooms were being used for which meetings, which were available, etc. And if you missed the meeting, how about being able to simply drag the meeting notes and other materials onto your laptop, cell phone or other portable device?

These are pretty simplistic ideas. And they were generated before my first cup of coffee. I’m sure you can think of better uses. Why not tell us all? Leave a comment and share your ideas.

Apple Fixes Two OS X Web Flaws, One Critical

June 23, 2007

Severity: Medium

22 June, 2007

Summary:

Today, Apple released a security update fixing two security issues in software packages that ship as part of OS X. An attacker exploiting the worst of these security issues could execute code on your Mac, possibly gaining full control of your computer. If you manage OS X 10.3.9 or 10.4.9 computers, you should download, test, and install the appropriate Apple security update as soon as possible.

Exposure:

Apple’s latest security update corrects two vulnerabilities affecting software packages that ship as part of OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.9. One of the flaws allows remote attackers to execute code on your OS X machines. We recommend you apply the update as soon as you can. Summarized, the flaws are:

  • Code execution vulnerability in Webkit. Webkit is one of the components that OS X uses to render Web pages and HTML. Webkit suffers from a memory corruption vulnerability related to the way it handles “type conversion when rendering frame sets.” Apple’s alert doesn’t describe this error in any more detail, but it does say that if an attacker can trick you into visiting a malicious Web page, she can exploit this flaw to either crash your Mac or execute code on it, potentially gaining control of your computer.
  • Cross-site scripting flaw in WebCore. WebCore is a framework that OS X uses to render HTML. WebCore suffers from a Cross Site Scripting (XSS) flaw involving the way it handles a particular HTML Object (XMLHttpRequest). By tricking one of your users into clicking a specially crafted link, an attacker could exploit this flaw to read cookies from other web sites the victim visits, or to even execute malicious scripts with the privileges of a site the user trusts.

Incidentally, Apple released another minor OS X security update a few days ago. That update fixed a trivial flaw in OS X 10.4.10 involving IPv6. A remote attacker could exploit the flaw to slow down your network performance. Since few of our subscribers use IPv6, we considered the flaw of little consequence. Nonetheless, you might consider installing that patch, too, while you’re updating your OS X machines to fix the two vulnerabilities described in this alert.

Solution Path:

Apple has released updates to fix these vulnerabilities for both OS X 10.3.9 and 10.4.9. Apple OS X administrators should download, test, and deploy the appropriate updates as soon as possible.

Note: If you have trouble figuring out which of these patches corresponds to your version of OS X, we recommend you let OS X’s Software Update utility automatically pick the correct update for you.

For All Users:

These attacks travel as normal-looking HTTP traffic, which you need to allow so your network users can access the World Wide Web. The most secure course of action is to install the updates.

Status:

Apple released updates to fix these issues.

IMPORTANT FISCAL YEAR END FAQ

============================================

We frequently hear the following type of question:

Q: “If I’ve received donations from the Adobe Donation Program on TechSoup Stock, can I still request products from the Symantec Software Donation Program on TechSoup Stock?”

A: If your organization has received donations from the Adobe Donation Program (or other donation program) at TechSoup Stock, this does not affect your organization’s eligibility to request products from other donation programs. Each donation program at TechSoup Stock has independent donation guidelines, and your organization might be eligible for products from MULTIPLE donation programs. Ten things I wish everyone knew about Word

June 19, 2007
By Stuart J Stuple

Mastering Word isn’t about understanding the architecture or the intent of the designers; it’s about finding the features and shortcuts that make your day-to-day job easier.

Copy just the formatting

Almost everyone knows how to copy and paste text to re-use the same boilerplate in more than one document. But did you know you can do the same thing with formatting? The Format Painter is located on the Home tab, it’s that little paintbrush icon. When you click the Format Painter, Word copies the formatting of from the start of your selection and the cursor changes to a paintbrush. Now, wherever you click in your document, that same formatting will be applied. Whether your selection will just be text formatting or both text and paragraph formatting depends on what is included in the selection. And if you want to keep pasting the same formatting, you can double-click the Format Painter button to make it “sticky.” When you’re finished “painting” just press Escape to release the painter.

Move from one spelling errors to another without using the dialog

Many people do a final edit of their document, checking each unrecognized word to see if it needs to be correct. There’s nothing wrong with opening the Spelling dialog to do this but you can accomplish the same text by clicking on the spelling icon in the status bar. At each unrecognized word, it displays the context menu with suggestions for you.

Change the formatting of an entire list

When you click on a number or bullet for a list, the entire list is selected. You can then apply text formatting for just that list without changing the paragraph formatting. You can also change the type of numbering or bullets used by selecting from the gallery associated with the bullet or numbering button.

Save a set of formatting as a style

Format Painter provides a convenient way of copy formatting from one spot to another but you can also store formatting for later use. Simply select the text that has the formatting that you want, right-click, and select Save Selection as New Quick Style. Once you give your new Quick Style a name, it will appear in the Style gallery on the Home tab.

Repeat an action

If you’ve just gotten through performing a complex task with a dialog and find yourself needing to do the same task again, you can click the Repeat button next to the Undo button or press Ctrl+Y.

Move between objects by clicking

At the lower right side of the window (just below the scroll bar) is the “Object Browser,” which consists of three buttons–a selection menu and a pair of Previous and Next arrows. One use of the Previous/Next arrows is after you’ve search for something using Find. When you close the Find dialog, the arrows are blue, indicating that you have a stored search. You can just click on the arrows to repeat the Find in the indicated direction. You can also use the “middle” button to select the type of object to browse. You can select to move among pictures, pages, headings, or any of a dozen object types.

Scale the text in your document

If you’re struggling to get text to fit in a certain number of pages, the first thing you’ll probably try is adjusting the margins on the Page Setup tab. But if that still doesn’t give you enough room you can select all of your text and use the Shrink Font button to reduce all of the text in your document–text at different sizes reduces proportionally so that your headings remain larger than the rest of your text. And you can squeeze just a portion of your document if you prefer; the command works on any selection.

Change the formatting of the standard paragraph

When you start a new document, Word makes some assumptions about the spacing of the typical paragraph (in Word 2007, it puts a bit of space between lines and almost a 1/6th of an inch of space between paragraphs). If you don’t like that spacing, you can make changes to any sample paragraph and then right-click on the “Normal” Quick Style and select “Update Normal to Match Selection.” Any existing paragraphs in your document and any new ones you create will use this formatting.

Show or hide the gridlines for tables

Tables in Word 2007 do not display the dividing lines between cells by default. These lines are called gridlines and show the borders of each cell. But unlike “real” borders, they don’t print with your document. You can use the Show Gridlines command at the bottom of the Borders menu or on the Table Layout tab to control whether or not these lines are showing.

Templates are a convenient way to store the starting point for a document

Most of us have documents that contain boilerplate text that we frequently need to reuse. And most of us who have a standard document that we use as a starting point have made the mistake of saving over the original of that document. If you have a document that you frequently use as a starting point for other documents, save a copy of it as a Template (DOTX) on your desktop. Then, when you double-click on that template, a copy of the document will be opened—no risk of ever saving over the original.
